Happy Open Thread again,
I think I am really has this fatigue of Kdrama lately but I managed finished Marriage Contract, I am late like 4 ep of Ms Temper,
but for quite a time, I have this trouble on liking Kdrama like before,
It seems like no Kdrama make me excited, the last time I get really excited is Kill Me Heal Me because of all the tricks and unbelievable journey.
On the other hand, I spend my spare time with C-Drama
The Amazing Boyfriend -Cdrama , this drama maybe has a bit of MLFAS esque, like the male lead hairstyle but with different story.
Watched up to ep 4 and I really love it, especially story wise. This description contain ep 1 spoiler.
It opens with Sleeping Beauty, a mummy found inside coffin in the ocean that still looked refined and beautiful, died by carotid artery injury so he likely to be murdered.
Then this celebrity with bad luck all over her but still managed to be "national 2nd lead actress".
So one night, she drive alone after a rejected proposal and some suicide prevention then got into a crash with truck that transported the sleeping beauty.
Imo, her car move so slow and the driver is a bit sleepy so both is at fault, he and her take so long to notice it.
She is in really bad state and her blood flow into the mummy body that push out of coffin, and he (the mummy) wakes up.
He then save her with his healing blood but since her blood flow in his body, they had this entanglement and he didn't know what will happen is she died since they can hear each other heartbeat.
He has some memory but he still blank in most part, understandable for 100 years sleeping and being drained, it gonna be magical if he remember.
So I look forward for the continuation bc it's so funny, the plot makes sense, the acting is okay for now and I am just glad I found it,
hope you guys a happy weekend ^^

I saw that one last night!! I really liked what I watched of it, but... the noodleman called me, and I had to try at least ep. 1 one of that and 3-4 of Entertainer. It's on my short list, though, after Momo Love (also a C drama--pretty cute, actually!)

Momo Love?
I just read the synopsis, is this from manga?
I remember reading a manga about the youngest girl out of all boys family, their parents died and she comes to new school, all of her brother is so protective, the youngest brother secretly likes her, she meets another boy at school, one of her brother is drag queen, then she discover she wasn't their sibling, she is adopted and her biological mom meet her. I think her mom leave her to the adopted couple and this include piano talent..(no offense to CITT, it really does have piano)

I really remember this one cause I lost the manga when I moved home, it's only 4 books,
this drama sounds so interesting, thanks ^^

This one's based off a manga Momoko Typhoon, but I haven't read it. I started watching it because it sounded like another manga, Oniichan to Issho--and that one's similar to what you described! Hah. Except in this one he's not totally drag, just an enthusiastic romance novelist. And he's the one she falls in love with. Hah, good times.

I don't think my manga is Oniichan to Issho- but it sounds good too, tomorrow is Saturday, I might looked for that Oniichan manga, sounds funny,

The drama does have shojo manga vibe and it also sounds fun, might marathon this one...

I just watched the first five episodes. It is so cute! It is definitely different enough from MLFAS that it feels fresh.

it's actually quite funny, I forget to write about the not-so-good-totally-obvious CGI and some unavoidable ads like Baidu, some unknown drink for me but it's one drama that when you think about it, the story makes sense and it's funny, it has serious side but all so much fun

I am somewhat interested in it too. Can't decide yet if I want to invest watching for 26 (I think) weeks, though.
The background music, the strings, is it just me, or does it sound so much like the musical interjections from "My Love From Anther Star" that it just jars me every time.

While we're talking about shows other than k-dramas, has anyone watched the currently airing Taiwanese rom-com Refresh Man? I started watching on a whim while browsing Viki for something to watch. Wow... I'll tell you I'm hooked. I know I shouldn't be. It's formulaic and sometimes rough around the edges, and practically a retread of last year's k-drama She Was Pretty. But d*mn if I can't stop watching. The leads have amazing chemistry and the show seems to hit all the right notes. It makes you laugh. It makes you cry. It makes you swoon. I definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a new show to sink their teeth into.

I'm watching Refresh Man. I almost dropped around episode 3 or 4 , because I just couldn't understand the main female character's choices of actions, no matter how desperate she was. I found she was too stubborn, and that she didnt think far in her decisions making (when the show insisted she was the best/super smart, etc). One day, she didn't have pride, another day she had too much pride... And she didn't learn from her actions. The second male lead doesn't do anything to me either. But I hung on and am still watching. I think the storyline is getting better. But to be honest, I still can't let go of Qi Yi and Chen Liang Liang , so I'm not warming up much to the Wen Kai - Yu Tang love.

Just You is probably one of my all-time favourite dramas. It started out kind of awkward and screechy, but as it unfolded, the characters had complex backstories and friendships, and it sort of all came together really well. Liang Liang and Qi Yi were such an unlikely couple and then it totally made sense.

Refresh Man doesn't quite have the same depth - too much seems to premise on their childhood misunderstandings or grudges. At times, if Wen Kai wasn't so gorgeous, Id say she better have had kick him to the kerb.

0

Yep also watching. But for me it's more of a background noise drama, enough to keep me entertained while I watch but not enough to reeeally pull me in. Which is perfect cause I'm in the middle of finals and can't afford any new drama addictions for at least another week! We'll see if I keep up with it afterwards, but kinda doubt it. The last T- drama I enjoyed was Moon River, which was mainly a retread of BoF but with a more kick-ass female lead. But true confessions - I think it was the male lead's resemblance to T.O.P. that kept me watching..... *hides face in shame* ... Bye for now dramaland, I'll be back soon!

Aloha, Emanresu...

I wasn't that thrilled with the chemistry between the leads in SHE WAS PRETTY when I watched it in late February.

My first case of Second Lead Syndrome. I was really rooting for Shin Hyuk /Siwon to win over Hye-jin, dang it.

Thanks for the pointer to REFRESH MAN.

I'm in the same boat. Formulaic and rough - I mean, in real life, if my boss leaned in to get a millimeter away from my face, I'd quit or file a lawsuit. The lead is so childish and the cackling bad girls at the office teaming up with the-meanest-jilted-guy ever is over the top. And yet, I. Can't. Stop. Watching. I just love how determined she is, and I love the actors. Other than that, I can't offer a better explanation that cute guy, fun chemistry.

I'm watching (and enjoying!) Refresh Man, too! Yes, it's formulaic fluff, but also peppered with little clever moments throughout. Plus, Aaron Yan is GORGEOUS - haven't seen him in anything since ISWAK and TKA, but he's become even better eye candy, if that's even possible, probably because of a more mature look in this drama. And I'm really digging the chemistry between the leads, I just wish they'd finally admit they're crazy about each other and give us a swoonworthy kiss. Come on, Show, I have faith in you! Don't let me down, please.

Hello, all:

Hope all is well. It's been a week of ups and downs; younger son is somewhat better although the hospital found nothing wrong with him. Am trying to get Asperger hubby to stop giving him gluten and dairy. Quite the battle. Other than that, I have four stories to write and seven books to read within the next month. Procrastination and the spectre of jury duty hangs heavily over my life.

Dramas:

Mrs Cop: End of episode 15 showed quite clearly why this drama doesn't work for me. Big car chase, upended and exploding car with driver inside. Mega-fire, and our heroine cop-ess looking on...laughing. Yep, laughing although a man is burning up inside. I understand that she raced toward the van to --ostensibly-- save the driver (or the money) but who laughs at such a time? Even if it is amusing to see all that money burning and blowing to bits. It's not that the heroine is insensitive; it's that the writers aren't connecting to their story and I keep getting the feeling that they are doing pain by numbers broad story strokes. With each draft of a story, one sees incidents in a new light. And with each repeated edit (or each additional eye looking at the story) one sees what is missing from the plot. Right now, I just have to assume that sometimes these kdramawriters are so hard-pressed for time that they just write quickly without the luxury of looking over and tweaking what they've already written.

Nam Jungi and Ms Temper: Really good well-written story. Even with the kdrama tropes, the story feels organic and the characters have personalities, actions, and character traits that create organic consequences and ramifications. I love the writer's ability to write passionately about modern life and yet to sweeten his/anger with the honey of humor. A great little drama, I think. Very underrated.

Marriage Contract: This is another good drama where the tropes of the drama still allow for good writing. Flawless Rescue Stud meets Noble Candy and both lives are changed. Manipulatuve makjang done right.

Master of Noodles: This feels like good writing as well. Finally, a revenge drama I've been waiting for. So far so good! As long as the writers don't needlessly overcomplicate matters (Please! Please! Do not make anyone fall in love with anyone in our villain's family! And do not put anyone in jail unfairly!) I gotta say this is one of the best villains I've seen in a while. Kim Gil Do is absolutely sociopathic. I fell in love with him in Punch and now I want to watch whatever drama he's in. (I think he was in Jeong De Jeon so I should see that one day.) I also like the actor who plays the best friend of Nameless/Moo Myeong/Soon Seok. Bluebird's House was a disappointing drama but he was so memorable.

The Entertainer: Much too much going on. Should I give this overplotted over-loaded story a chance?

Daebak: Ah me! I tried! Lord knows I tried!

Have a great weekend, all.

Master of Noodles has me hooked. *spoilers* I loved Baro as the young Gil Do, too. We already know so much and it's only ep 2 with 18 to go. Like you, Carole, I hope it doesn't derail, but so far the start is solid. My heart ached for the father who lived after that evil dump off the cliff but suffered massive head injury results the rest of his life when he was murdered a second time by the grown up and evil-er Gil Do. And the 19 year-olds in the orphanage with sad, sad, stories they are carrying, such a heavy load!

I was not prepared to feel the intensity right off the bat but wow - i can feel the evil of Kim Gil Do played by Jo Jae Hyun. Good to see Chun Jung Myung again after Heart2Heart. His character again is traumatized by fire!!

Am looking forward to more of this show!

God of Noodles really surprised me. Very gripping. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm actually finding that the focus on noodles is actually refreshing the revenge themes in this show. It sounds ridiculous, but the writer and director are doing a great job of tapping into how the culture of noodles is in bringing people together to share in something comforting, delicious and warm. (Spoilery words ahead...) For someone to use something like that to ruin someone's life is actually all the more horrifying for this reason, especially considering our hero, his father, and the importance of noodles in their lives. All this has me passionately pulling for our villain's downfall in a way I don't think I would if this were a more typical revenge set-up.

Ya know, I probably won't ever be able to get through the name or premise description without laughing, but the drama itself is a completely different story.

Hello! I just finished watchind "Signal". It's been a while since I watched a worthy Kdrama like this. It is a perfect show! So smart, music is great, actors are great! Now I am looking for something with the same level of plot coherence, without cliches and storytelling shortcuts. What can you recommend? P.S. I used to be big kdrama watcher, but no longer have patience to go through cliche or overused plots. So Signal was a breath of fresh air.

You might have to lower your standards a bit because let's face it, kdramas like Signal usually come around only every few years. Personally,

I personally recommend Misaeng/Incomplete Life and Yoona's Street for older dramas (blissfully rewatching both right now) and Six Flying Dragons for a more recent drama if you haven't watched either. I'm still at the beginning of 6FD and so far I think it's great. It also got rave reviews from those who completed it!

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm still halfway through "Signal" now...but I've started to slow down my viewing, to make it last longer.

It's a really great show, and I'm only on episode 7, but I have also noticed some places where the plot doesn't make sense...raising some questions that, well, I believe we're just meant to overlook...such as:

*SIGNAL SPOILERS AHEAD*

1. When Jae Han gets shot and talks over the walkie-talkie to Hae Yong one last time telling him to convince the 1998 Jae Han, it's obvious he's holding the walkie-talkie with him. But in 2001 he supposedly went missing in action, and they only found his abandoned car and effects--which were later put in yellow garbage bags at the back of the truck, and where the walkie-talkie is discovered by Hae Yong at the beginning of the series... Meaning that while the body and physical whereabouts of Jae Han were never discovered by the police in 2001, they nevertheless found his walkie-talkie (which should've been beside his body)?? It just seems like a loophole the writers didn't intend us to catch.

2. When the bus driver kills the woman who had been blackmailing him for so many years, why was it necessary that he draw attention to his son's crimes by killing her in the exact same manner that his son had killed his victims?? It doesn't make any sense at all. He could've killed her and made it look like an accidental death, thus no one would think that the serial killer was back on the run, and no one would think of linking her to the unsolved mystery. Another dumb dumb move that I can see was used to move things plot-wise, but still...

3. The bus driver's son also had no real reason for being kept in a hospice-style care center. He was paralyzed from the waist down, meaning he would be stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, but he could've just been taken care of at home. If the bus driver was retired (with no income) AND being blackmailed, wouldn't he be unable to afford his son's expensive medical set-up?

Anyway, us viewers were already asked to suspend our disbelief with the whole premise of the intermissions being signalled across time to allow both male leads to communicate, so I guess a few more suspensions won't make much of a difference..

this has been bothering me for a while and I'm not questioning anyone's translation skills but kim so hyun's upcoming drama is adopted from the webtoon 싸우자귀신아 right? doesn't it translate directly to let's fight ghost versus bring it on ghost?
anyway super excites for that. I really hope kwak dong yeon somehow manages to score bong pal (the main male character's role). I love youth dramas but the recent ones that I can think of off the top of my head were not my cup of tea. with this and MDBTC I'm actually really looking forward to the latter part of the year even if it entails me going back to uni at the same time lol

Also, the mark of a great translation is making it relatable to the audience for whom you're translating. "Let's Fight, Ghost" makes slightly less sense than "Bring It On, Ghost" as "bring it on" is more likely to be said by English speakers when issuing a challenge than "let's fight."

Family is visiting so I had little progress on the drama watching front. ?
Am slightly addicted to the Graham Norton Show though. Not sure if anyone else watches. It's hilarious British type humour talk show. Randomly saw an episode with Meryl Streep (she's one of my girl-crushes! ?) and then I watched too many more episodes.

Hope to get some Kdrama watching in this week once family goes home. Have Liar Game all ready to be watched! ?

So, life lessons learned this week: never eat a box of bottlecaps, a box of mike n' ikes and three slices of bread at 11:30 at night. Not if you don't want a nasty stomachache in the morning. Haha, oh well.

Marriage Contract. What can I say? What can I possibly say that will adequately express just how much I love that drama?Or specifically when they're dancing to the blues barefoot? :) :) :) I've been squeeing about it in the recaps, and finished part 3 of my drama rant on my own blog. Which I'm now linking to DB. (small step for mankind, big step for Cozybooks ;) )

Entertainer: I've been trying to figure this show out, and it's bothering me. I feel like once I do, I'm going to learn something and really enjoy it... if I can just get my finger on it. I really agreed with the last recap's comments, it's starting to get in it's own way. But I have a lot of friends who love music (not like everyday enjoy it, like they have a deep soul connection to it), and I get similar vibes here. I want to understand it, so I'm gonna keep watching. I've actually really enjoyed it despite a bit of headache trying to understand its message, so it's still in in my book!

the Noodlester: I don't think I'll ever be able to take the title seriously, but I loved the first episode! Ha, I'll catch up and see what I think then.

Momo's Love: Another cute Chinese drama, because of course that's the BEST way to study for Chinese AP. Actually, it has been really helpful.

Happy Weekend, all!

*sigh* because I really, really want to like it. I really do. Maybe I still do? I'm not disappointed enough to drop it yet at least, and I kinda feel like supporting it just because it's a (failing?) show trying to entertain about a (failing? w/ single dad and convict) group trying to entertain. I just keep expecting both to suddenly wow me, y'know? Like the underdog story will spill over into the real life drama ratings.

Happy Friday, everyone!

I think I'll be going through Reply 1988 withdrawal soon ?. (I'm only up to ep 13 but don't want to end it due to potential mass withdrawal symptoms). I was wondering if any one had any recs on sitcoms or weekend dramas with a funny family setting...like reply 1988? Thanks!! :)

For me personally, there isn't anything like reply 1988. Having said that, I can't make self go back to it cause the ending hits me right in the gut. No, not about which guy ends up with the girl, but the ending...ugh...too much. Just too much.

But...bad family is a funny "mismatch" family setting, isn't it?

Hello beanies!

I've finally finished my exams which also marks the end of my formal education. Feels kind of surreal.

Strangely, now that I have more time to watch dramas, I'm getting too restless to watch any of them. I've been hopping from one drama to another, none of them really engaging me on a deep level like SFD or Signal.

I Remember You has very favorable reviews on Dramabeans and I love Park Bo-gum so I watched the first three episodes, but I just find it a little off. I can't really pinpoint what's wrong. Is it the directing? The dialogues? The acting? Hyun is supposed to be a genius profiler but somehow it isn't convincing me. Don't think I'm going to continue watching, unless it's a show that takes its time to pick up? Also caught the first episode of Girl Who Sees Smell, and again it just doesn't connect with me. I think Signal has totally ruined me. ): I can't settle for anything of less quality.

Also, out of curiosity I watched some Fashion King. Lol. It's one of those shows where everyone complains it's bad that you just have to see for yourself how bad it is. Shin Se-kyung's a pushover and I can't read her expression most of the time. Yuri is bland and even harder to read. Lee Je-hoon was wasted in it. But most importantly I'm shocked at how even Yoo Ah-in performed poorly in it. His facial expressions went into overdrive... It was too much.

Save me from my drama slump, beanies! Any recommendations for dramas with good acting and tightly written plot?

Keep watching I Remember You.

I couldn't get into it after 2 episodes, dropped it but continued reading the recaps. Picked it up again at episode 10 (from episode 10), watched live till the end and then watched episodes 1-9 that I had missed.

Normally when I drop a drama it's for good, but I think this one got better and the earlier parts that I couldn't get into before I could get into once I knew the whole picture.... Not sure if this makes sense, but I think this is a surprisingly good drama and reasonably well written (should add I had zero expectations before as I didn't really pay attention to promo and wasn't paying attention to any of the actors in it before either).

I Remember You isn't so much about the geeeeenius profiler (in DB's parlance) and the crime solving, as about the characters' backstory. Once you have enough information (including the pretty obvious answer to the whoddunit), you may actually become more invested in what happens next. I also recommend you keep watching :-)

I think Marriage Not Dating requires an appreciation of a certain kind of humour.

Which I personally don't have, so I also bailed on this drama after two episodes – which, I too think weren't the wonders of the greatest writing or acting (as some of the online reactions seemed to make them out to be).

Also think there's a very vocal group of Han Groo fans. I've only ever seen her in the couple episodes of MND that I watched and while she was fine, I didn't think she was strikingly amazing.

But hey, everyone has a different taste...

I'm enjoying Marriage Not Dating a lot right now, hmm I think her acting for the comedic parts is natural and not too over-the-top, which is good because I really don't like Hwang Jung-eum style. But what really impressed was the more serious scenes. My heart ached for her at the part where she was crying and knocking on the toilet door asking Hoon-dong to break up with her face-to-face instead of avoiding her. Overall it's quite an enjoyable watch so far. But yes I agree, not everyone enjoys rom-coms of this style.

0

@alua, The humor could be it as I never found it particularly funny. I watched the whole thing, but didn't get anything out of it. Not really a Han Groo fan either, she was okay, but that's about it. I think the show got better after the first two episodes, but then somewhere around the middle it became worse again. The only reason I finished was because of Jinwoon (even if he is the worst actor in the show lol).

@Kaylie, I'm glad you found a drama to capture your interest! I'm in such a slump right now too and really can't keep my focus, even Sassy Go Go is beginning to bore me. Most of the time I head a deadpoint at about a quarter or halfway through *sigh* I think I may be too critical lol.
I agree that she wasn't too over-the-top. There was at least no aegyo, which can be so exhausting. Hoon-dong is a bit too much at times though (but it got better after a while).

0

I would watch Marriage Not Dating first, perhaps, cos it's more light-hearted than Signal, SFD and Nine:Nine Time Travels. It's pretty funny, and has a great upbeat soundtrack that is a HUGE hit with my 5 year old daughter..

I agree with many of Carole McDonnell's recommendations, too, especially Secret Love Affair (if you have a crush on YAI, like I do). But it's heavy watching, and the subject matter (adultery) may not rock your boat. Another drama about adultery is Valid Love, but to me it was more about real relationships, family, commitment and friendship. And it was also acted and written very well, too.

Watching White Christmas was a chilling experience. Very dark and unexpected from KBS. Oh and Wang's Family! I usually hate weekend family dramas, but this is one of the few that I enjoyed. I think "I Remember You" features one of the strongest female leads in Kdrama land.. It's easy to overlook, cos she's not macho-tough in the way "Signal's" Police Che is, but if you step back and think about how she meets her challenges and faces her enemies and knows when to push ahead and when not to, you realize there aren't that many leading ladies out there that are quite like her.

Hello everyone! Sorry for using DB to ask my questions, but I've been needing these answered and have no one else to ask. So please help me. These questions are for Viki users, preferably QCs.
1. How many subtitles have you done before you apply to become QC? Is it only the minimum 3000 or is it more than that?
2. It is to my understanding that you have to ask someone to nominate you in order to become a QC. But how do you get them to nominate you? Do you just ask them? Or do you have to do some subtitling for some of their shows first?
3. How long does it take for you to be accepted to be a QC from the date that you applied? Is it a week, a fortnight etc.?
4. How many times have you applied to be a QC before you are finally accepted?
That's all. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions :)

I've been lurking around here for a very long time but never had a chance to comment. Now I just want to pop in to say
that the closing episodes of Pied Piper are absolutely brilliant! Probably the best ending I've seen in KDramas. Super Powerful message the scriptwriter managed to convey. Although the drama is not perfect (still very good overall), it'd be worthwhile to watch it for the ending alone. Any PP fan here?

Randomly watched episode 8 and was hooked till the end. First it was Shin Ha Kyun's performance, but the story is so full of exhilarating twist that just keep me wanting to know the end. Has a dark and somewhat nihilistic vibe, but balanced it with glimpses of heartwarming moments from the interaction of the characters.
Have just finished final episode and it's awfully intense! The villain's character was so layered; was so livid at the end but strangely wanted to applaud too!
Sad about the bad, rating-killing news about the stolen script, but if it was stolen, well, it was a script worth stealing...

I found tears in my eyes for the finale of Pied Piper. I was a crying mess and I rarely cry during kdramas. So either I was hormonal or it was just so damn emotional! I'm inclined to think it's the latter.

Such a brilliant drama from start to finish, I was particularly impressed by how intelligent the script was. It only required patience to follow the storyline. I wish it were recapped and the ratings were higher, but I would recommend it to anyone who's thinking of watching it.

You're not alone, Adal. I'm a guy (albeit sentimental one) and I sobbed like a child during the last EP.! I was able to relate a lot to the show. I think I like PP more than Signal. Such a brilliant show deserves more viewers!

Delurking to declare my love for this show. I am surprised to see that it's not recapped here even though DB has increased the number of drama recaps of late.

So I wasn't the only strange one with tears in my eyes watching the finale, good to know that.

When the villain was outed way before the final week, I had wondered what else could the show pull out of its magician's hat? Well, I needn't be concerned because it was a huge bunny! I can't remember when was the last time I watched a drama that ended magnificently and this is one.

To think that I almost dropped this drama after 2 episodes because I was a little irked that the female lead character was annoying. Thankfully, she improved.

I am probably the minority who didn't enjoy Shin Ha Kyun's performance in Brain. I thought he overacted and had a tendency to do so. The poster and trailer for this drama didn't allay my doubts. I enjoyed him much more in this one but IMO, another guy stole this show from him. I wasn't expecting it at all and boy, was I blown! Amazing performances from the leads and the cast was stellar.

Pity the allegation of plagiarism. Whoever wrote this drama and script is brilliant! The PD was great too.

The Dae Jang Geum song will always be a classic. I went to YouTube Buyonghwa and it gave me goosebumps! I really loved Dong Yi's soundtracks. That song sung by Jang Nara was really beautiful too.

0

For some reason, when I watched Dong Yi, I always associated the children's voices in Buyonghwa with Prince Yeoning. There's this warmth and sincerity in Prince Yeoning's smile, and I loved his interactions with his parents and (half) brother. So every time I heard the song I would think of his smile. I had a hard time accepting Prince Yeoning actually grew up to be King Yeongjo who killed his own son. I blame it on the child actor in Dong Yi for being too cute, lol.

0

Lee Hyung-Suk was so cute as Prince Yeoning. Yeo Jin-goo's Prince Yeoning is right in the middle. Now I've seen Yeoning from a baby all the way to the end of his life.

One of these days I'll watch all of his sageuks in order.

I still remember Dae Jang Geum opening

ganara ganara aju gana
nanari naryodo . . .

it stuck on me even after these years.

Same here :).

0

I love that Dae Janggeum song too! It sounds very traditional, calming, and innocent.

For some reason, Jang Nara's voice sounds like a child's when she sings the Dong Yi OST. I was surprised to find that she was a full-grown adult when I started searching up on OSTs later on. :)

I'm not going to say yet she's an amazing actress – this seems to be her first role and I'd want to see her in more – but she really, really suits the role and is pulling off some really difficult acting in Love Song.

Yes... but he's always been that wonderful kind of actor. He often plays these bonkers characters that look easy to do but then you get one subtle scene like this and you know he's the real stuff.

0

Where to start...

I just discovered My Amazing Boyfriend last night. Definitely in the male lead fish-out-of-water but supernaturally empowered vein of YFAS and Queen In-Hyun's Man. So, if you liked either one or both of those you'll potentially like this one. I made the mistake of watching the extended trailer which reveals way to many spoilers, but I'll just say that there's lots of danger and intrigue coming for the lead couple. Most of the C-Dramas I have tried have been long and rather boring melodramas (the great exception being Love Me if You Dare), but this looks to be another good exception.

The Entertainer...I have a feeling this is simply the wrong kind of show for Ji Sung. He thrives when he has other actors to play off with intensity, and he has none here. There was bound to be a letdown sooner or later coming off such solid work in Secret and Kill Me, Heal Me.

Marriage Contract...still haven't watched the last episode. I know, it's not all that bad, but that show took me on such a roller coaster...yes, it was good, I'll give it that.

Ms. Temper & Nam Jung-gi...I think one of the keys to enjoying it is to accept it for what it is. I don't see any romance between the lead two characters, although they likely will end the show at a place of mutual trust and respect.

Goodbye Mr. Black...one of the things that drives me crazy about this show is that while I want to, I have never felt the romantic vibe between Black and Swan. I especially don't feel any passion for her coming from him. While he has his (noble idiocy) reasons for pushing her away, I don't get his sudden turn to pursue her again. This is a show with so many issues between members of the "good guys" (especially Swan and Black) that could be eased or resolved if people would actually talk straightforwardly with each other.

Refresh Man...we're into the denial of feelings/big misunderstandings phase. The show is no "Marry Me or Not" but at least its still keeping my interest. Most of the side characters are not annoying, IMO, which helps.

I guarantee you, that its awesome in its own way. I super love that its sisterly friendship which is wayyy underused in kdrama land compared to bromance. I was pleasantly surprise by Yura performance and all three of them has quite a messy relationship but it works. I love this short series due to the 2 female lead friendship.

Aloha, MGasol33...

I've been exploring variations on a theme, Chunhyang to be precise.

THE STORY OF HYANG DAN (listed in AsianWiki as HYANGDAN) grabbed my attention when I read JB's recaps of the 2 episodes.

To fully appreciate it, I first read refresh_daemon's review of Im Kwon-taek‘s film CHUNHYANG, and then watched it on the Korean Film Archive at YouTube.com. I enjoyed the pansori interludes very much.

[One of these days I'll get around to SOPYONJE and its sequel, BEYOND THE YEARS.]

HYANG DAN cracked me up, and was my introduction to Choi Si-Won. I loved the music and performances by the Kim triplets aka Infinity of Sound -- whom I later spotted in ANTIQUE. I enjoyed it so much I took a detour to watch ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE, also directed by Kim Sang-Ho... and followed up with THE KING AND THE CLOWN.

Later I moved on to THE SERVANT / A STORY OF BANGJA, while having flashbacks to GU AM HEO JOON.

Ryu Deok Hwan's performance as King Gong Min in FAITH really got me, so I've been checking out his work. WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL had terrific music by Joe Hisaishi -- more on that some other time. MY SON and THE PEACH TREE needed a light chaser, and LIKE A VIRGIN filled the bill. I couldn't get over his dancing... especially when he was giving pointers to the other wrestler. The traditional wrestling was very interesting to me. I was scorekeeper for my college's team, and was utterly intrigued to compare the American variety with ssireum, so dug around on YouTube to watch some matches. I got a kick out of Lee Eon's performance, may he RIP.

Hope this gives you some ideas... Pakalana

Happy Friday everyone (:

I've been too distracted lately to do any real marathon watching, so I've been on a mixed diet of variety/reality and dramas these days lol.

Shut Up! Flower Boy Band - Turns out it was a rewatch, but I couldn't remember it at all despite it not being that long ago. Never really captured me and while it started out with a feeling of authenticity, by the end it was completely unrealistic. My high school days were filled with nothing but music and artists with crazy egos lol, so I guess that made me demand too much from this. Good OST and positively surprised by L's acting.

Prince's Prince - I love FT Island, but Jonghun is probably their only member who without a doubt should stay clear of acting... .

Heartstrings - just started. So, so bad. Just no. I don't get why everyone loves Park Shin Hye, the only thing I've been able to stand her in was Pinocchio.

Sassy Go Go - currently halfway through. The only highlight in my dramawatching lately! It's so good! Even though some episodes are better than others, the acting and everything else just blends together really well.
I was so not prepared for Lee Won Geun! How can one guy be that charming? (Also am I the only one who wants him and Kim Soo Hyun to play brothers in a drama? They could totally pull that off.) Ji Soo's character is really moving and I can't wait to see where they take his storyline. The only negative for me is N. I don't know if he's just a bad actor or if it's the lack of facial expressions from too much PS, but I find him really distracting in a bad way in every scene he's in.

Entertainer - meh. I'll keep watching for now, but the only episode I've liked so far is ep 3. The music is insanely generic and the plot is so contrived and full of holes.

Other than that I've been watching some random Running Man episodes (more often than not find it boring, so I tend to only watch when guests I like come on. RM fans really need to stop getting mad at the guest-concept - it's part of the original concept and even the first episodes had guests), trying to watch the remainder of the 1n2d s3 episodes I'm missing before Yoon Shi Yoon (still a long way to go, but it doesn't matter since it's so much fun. JJY and Junho always crack me up), watched some of Roommate s1 (Park Min Woo! Wish he'd get a lead role sometime soon), Heeyeol's Sketchbook, King of Mask Singer and almost finished with Cheongdamdong 111 (even if the only people this had featured were CEO Han and FT Island I would've been happy lol, love 'em! I also just finished their Coming Out! reality show which was hilarious and gave a really good look into the everyday problems and joys of being in a band together).

Looking at this post I may have a procrastination problem. How do I have time for watching all that??
(And I didn't even notice, but basically all of my TV choices this week can be linked to music lol!)

Heartstring: oh the potential this drama had. *sadness*

Yep. The only thing to his credit is that he did manage to have chemistry with the other male lead in a romantic way, which probably isn't easy for a straight guy.

I think Heartstrings is getting better as I go along, but considering that it started at rock bottom that really isn't saying much. But I'm pleasantly surprised at Yong Hwa's singing. (CNBlue bore me to no end, so I had no idea whether he's a good musician or not beforehand.)

For some reason, I find Jung Yong Hwa so. attractive. Which is weird, because I've never seen any of his dramas in total. I literally watched the first half of the first episode of You're Beautiful and then stopped watching, but ever since that time, his face has been imprinted on my heart. <3 I think it's because his face is vaguely similar to my first boyfriend's face? (Even though my first boyfriend was white? Who can know.)

Re: Park Shin-hye, I have not seen most of her dramas, but I actually thought she was really good in Flower Boy Next Door. I thought her portrayal of Dok-mi was really nuanced and sensitive. I haven't seen Heirs, Pinocchio, or You're Beautiful though, and I know those are her more popular dramas, so there's that.

Associations can be powerful like that. But I definitely don't think you're alone in finding him attractive, I constantly see people remarking on his good looks. I might be one of the only people who doesn't get it at all. But then I don't find Lee Min Ho or Jo In Sung attractive either, so maybe I'm just weird lol (:

I haven't seen FBND yet, it's the only Oh Boy! show I'm missing. I really, really had a hard time with her acting in You're Beautiful, but that show was pretty bad in general. She was decent in Pinocchio, mostly because her aegyo was turned down a notch. Can't speak for her Heirs-acting, haven't seen that yet.

0

I don't find Lee Min-ho attractive at all, and this has actually kept me from watching any of his dramas.

Okay well, a little more explanation: I read the description of the drama he is best known for -- Boys Over Flowers -- and there is no way on God's green earth I would EVER watch it. I hate hate HATE it when the male lead is violent/cruel to the female lead but she fixes him ~*~with the power of her love~*~, so I'd never ever watch BOF. But apparently he became wildly popular from that drama, and so I can't ever tell if any of his later dramas that people rave over are actually good, or if folks are just raving because they love him and they'd love anything he was in.

I liked a lot of Flower Boy Next Door, though I found it very draggy toward the end. But it might be worth a watch if you don't have anything else to do. Park Shin-hye really does do a great job of playing a timid, agoraphobic character who is still trying to connect with the world. Plus, Kim Seul-gi (one of my FAVORITE young actresses) is in it, and has an ADORABLE love-line.

Another thing I really liked about this drama is that it upends that trope where a guy really really likes a girl, so he (naturally) gets to "have" her. One of the main male characters has been pining over PSH's character forever and a day, but when she finally comes out of her shell, she goes for someone else. I like that the drama didn't "give" her to him as his "due" for pining for her.

0

Oh yay, someone else who doesn't think he's attractive! We're so rare, I almost feel like we should form some sort of club lol!

I forced myself to watch BOF because I was sick of not getting the gazillion references - I skipped through a good part of the many last episodes. The only redeeming factor was Kim Bum who's just adorable. Otherwise LMH did pretty much carry that drama, but with everything else being so awful, that doesn't say much. I've also seen him in Personal Taste and that was equally painful. I think you're right that lots of people rave just because it's him. Same with lots of other actors/-tresses. Blind love, I guess?

It's the worst when dramas let a guy "have" the woman. They main male leads so often go around acting like the female lead is an object without feelings. They step back to "let the other guy have her" etc without ever considering how she might feel.
Sounds like I might just have to give FBND a try sometime.

I find Yong Hwa really handsome as well! I had a major obsession. All I want is to look at his face. One of my major Korean Crushes I must say. I wanted Mirae to be with him in Marry Him If You Dare just because he looks super dashing in suits. Haha. The superficial comes alive at times.

0

"The superficial comes alive at times."
Haha, we all have our weaknesses that can make us completely shallow. Personally, I've watched all the dramas Jinwoon has been in despite some very questionable acting lol (: As long as we know we're being superficial, right?

Happy Friday! Now it is ratings war in Mon-Thursday heh- which one do you like best? I like all about the same(meaning no crack drama), but I enjoyed Piped Piper (too bad about recent plagiarism scandal), and now I'm excited for the next drama since I like two female leads in it- Jun Hae-bin (Joseon Gunman) and Seo Hyun-jin (Three musketeers).

There was the production press conference for tvn's new drama 'Oh Hae-young again' [xportsnews]. Drama is about a romance with a twist due to two people with same name- beautiful Oh Hae-young/Jun Hae-bin and Ugly Oh Hae-young/Su Hyun-jin (yea I know how can she be ugly), and Park Do-kyung/Eric who can see the future. Since this is the first romcom this year for tvn after heavy/dark dramas like 'Signal', 'Pied piper', and 'Memory', there is high expectation about if it can bring in warm cheerful wind to the viewers' living rooms. This show has PD Song Hyun-ok PD who did 'Marriage not dating' and the writer Park Hae-young who penned 'I live in ChungdamDong' among others where women's detailed emotions were portrayed realistically.

About the purpose of this production, Song PD said, "I thought hard about what the production purpose could be coming here. On the poster it says 'Same name Misunderstanding Romance'. As it says, Same name, misunderstanding, romance- these 3 words explain the drama very well." He also said, "Because of this misunderstanding over the same name, the incidents occur which change the lives of 4 people. It has a plot that that incidents develop to another romance like blessing in disguise. Characters are people who live with their own wounds. They can't talk about those wounds easily, and live feeling unhappy. They can feel happy only on the fact that they are alive. I'd like for people feeling refreshed by this drama. I plan to make this drama as the one viewers watch on Monday and Tuesday afternoon to relieve all their stress and cry or laugh out loud." About casting Seo Hyun-jin as ugly Hae-young, he said "I really felt conflicted. I have to cast two people -common Oh Hae-young and beautiful Oh Hae-young, who people can tell clearly no matter who sees them, but I wondered if there are any actresses who are so different in Korea... When I met SHJ, I thought she was very pretty. But I keep telling her "You can't be pretty". I think she is an actress with various colors. I thought she could express the sadness, happiness and joy Oh Hae-young has."

About her image-ruining acting, Seo Hyun-jin said, "It is harder to act pretty than act being ruined. There was not many times I felt embarrassed about the things I have done. But if I have to choose one, there was a scene I had to dance on the video, and it was difficult because I had to dance without the music."

Eric who plays the male lead said, "I played the role appealing my charm as Cheobol son before, but this time it is the role to fall for a woman whom I should not love. It is the character who treats her well even though he does not show outwardly.
While talking about a new buzz word, Eric said "I have received feel-good pain for last 10 years because of 'Firebird'. But so far there hasn't been any new buzz word. If ratings are not good until the end, I might get frustrated and yell 'My head is burning!'". Also when asked about things he wants to see if he has the special talents like the character in the show, he said, "Actually I am more curious about my wife's face (who is my wife?) rather than ratings...Please make sure to write "I am more curious about wife's face rather than ratings as the article title."
About the question who is his ideal woman among the two, he said "At first being pretty is important, you know. But being pretty can be heart, not just the face. So no comment here."

Jun Hae-bin said about her beautiful OHY role, "I liked it more because the character had to be cheerful and optimistic. This is the character who naturally turns into a villain, but I have so much affection toward this person." She does work-out to play her character well. "I do work-out diligently, and make efforts not to gain weight." She also said "I worked with Seo Hyun-jin for a short time during 2002 world cup. I feel like I met my long-lost younger sister. I saw her often because our work schedule kind of overlaps. For Eric, even though he is a way over senior, he is very friendly and playful. The set environment is joyful."

Ye Ji-won (who played admin boss in Miseang) is a scary boss in the company but gets drunken at night, and has romance with younger sister's friend Lee Jin-sang/Kim Ji-suk. Kim Ji-suk said, "I am so thankful if my partner is older woman like Ye Ji-won ssi. Because my first love was much older woman, I don't have prejudice against older women or feeling awkward. With sunbae nim, there are many sides I like. I cheered when I heard the casting news that Ye ji-won was my partner.. Ye Ji-won sunbae always does fresh ad-live and does it very well. There are some happenings we were even shocked in the show, and we are different from other previous Noona dongseang couple." Ye Ji-won also said she screamed 'Halleluiah' and ran around after she heard Kim Ji-suk casting news.

About ratings promise Eric said "I am thinking how about inviting the viewers who love the drama to the filming set if ratings go over 5%. Lee Jae-yeon films in the prison- don't the viewers want to see the prison?" Lee Jae-yeon corrected it saying "I will invite them to some nice place rather than the prison." Jun Hae-bin said "If ratings go over 5%, I will have actors to give fans with name 'Hae-young' free-hugs.

Fighting Oh Hae-young again!

Hi, fan.

Many thanks for translating this great news. I've been wondering when Seo Hyun-jin would take up another project.

SHJ was terrific in THE KING'S DAUGHTER SU BAEK-HYANG, in which her character Seol-Nan got really beat up and dirty while going through basic training as a spy back in Three Kingdoms days. Her everyday plain Jane look was in no way ugly. When it came time to impersonate the princess and she got dolled up in finery, she knocked everyone's socks off.

More importantly, her chemistry with the rest of the cast was great. That ability is just the ticket for this kind of role.

Now if only she'd get cast in another nice sageuk. ;-)

Hey girl! (I...am assuming you are a girl; if not, please correct me!)

I saw that you replied later to one of my comments on last week's Open Thread, asking about Ojakgyo Brothers. You said:

I’d like to know more about the Okjayo brothers. Isn’t the ending supposed to be terrible?

It's been a while since I watched it, but I don't remember the ending being terrible at all. The series does get a little draggy toward the end (from my reading on Dramabeans, it seems that the show was so popular that they gave it an 8-episode extension, which definitely slowed down the pace), but I thought the ending for each brother was sweet, well-developed, and believable.

I loved each of the brothers' different journeys through this drama, and each of the different women that they fell in love with. I also really enjoyed the older actress, Kim Ja-ok, who played the mother in this series. She did a great job portraying a multi-faceted character. It was so refreshing to see an older actress get that kind of meaty, central role in a drama.

Definitely check it out if you have time! This is the first (and only, so far) family/weekend drama that I watched, and I think it was a great introduction to the genre. Plus, it was my introduction to Joo Won and his adorable alien dimple face. Ugh he is the sweetest, I just wanna smooch him. :-*

I like Kim Ja-Ok, too. She has another son named Choi Han-Gyul (a real prince of a guy), and another daughter named Kim Sam Soon. ;-)

In addition to Joo Won, I also want to see Yeon Woo-Jin before he goes all Joo-Wal

I remember someone mentioned she wanted to see Lee Jin-wook(Goodbye Mr.Black) Interview. I found one done early last month [imbc Star-ting].
Q: How have you spent your time?
A: I have been shooting diligently. Well, I am always working hard like a cow.
Q: You chose 'Goodbye Mr.Black' as your new project. What is your role in the show?
A: Cha Ji-woon who I play is the character who grew up rich so he is not twisted, has full of kindhearted affection and relays uplifting energy to other people.
Q: CJW is navy officer.
A: I must be looking boring. People tell me I look good in uniform. On the set, filming directors used to say they wish I was always in the uniform. Guess I look good in it more than some other people. (Laugh)
Q: Staffs praised your action acting in the show.
A: There are times you get strength which you usually don't have- like when you are thrown into the set. I don't remember how I did it, but they say I did good after the shooting. You will be delighted if you see the drama so please make sure you watch it.
Q: Did you have the action instinct even when you were in school?
A: No. I was a person believing in peace/non-violence and serious student. Parents of my friends liked me so much, that they used to say "Just play with Jin-wook-yi". And teachers said "You have to be a friend like him." You know grown-ups are never wrong. (Laugh)
Q: You are bragging too much openly.
A: I started bragging when my age hit around 35. Since this is self-PR age. Just a min. Isn't this also old language? I think people said that in early 2000's.

Q: The show was filmed in Thailand. Was food ok for you?
A: I am not a picky eater- eat regardless of which country foods are from. On the set, when Korean food truck and Thailand food truck came, I chose the Thailand food truck. People used to ask me if the smell of spice is ok, but it was tasty for me.
Q: Maybe you will eat happily even if your wife can't cook in the future.
A: Maybe. But if it doesn't taste good, I might cook it myself?
Q: You act along with Moon Cha-won and Yoo In-young ssi.
A: Moon Cha-woon ssi is the actress I really wanted to film together. When I heard we were cast together, I was so happy. Yoo In-young ssi plays the woman who I originally loved in Korea.
Q: How was working with Moon Cha-won ssi?
A: This is the first time I acted with Moon Cha-won ssi. She is very easy-going person, taking care of other actors/actresses very well.
Q: Your face was known before your name by doing various CFs. You also shot the commercial with Jo In-sung. How was it at the time of casting? (Wow that is long time ago)
A: In-sung ssi was the star that time already because of the drama 'What happened in Bali'. When I heard I was to shoot with Jo In-sung ssi, I thought "That will be fun." I wonder I might match the (star?) level with Jo In-sung a little now.(Laugh)
Q: You danced in the CF. Are you good at dancing?
A: No. As you can see I am slow. My rhythm is half-count behind. That time after we shoot the CF, I heard the owner said "This guy is a good model, but he does not fit with our advertising concept at all." But I think I can do much better if I do it again. Speaking of which- How about doing it again?
Q: In 2005, you did donuts CF when only best of best stars did that time.
A: Right. It is still famous, but it was very famous donuts commercial at that time as an advertisement. I wonder if I attributed to upping the level of that product image. This is also 'How about doing it again?' case.

Q: You did 7 projects for 3 and half years before you went to the army.
A: Yes, I was right saying that I worked like a cow. I think I did a lot of projects. But thinking again, I regret- I should've worked even harder, even more.
Q: Did you become a overnight star?
A: No, I don't think so. I think I just got better little by little every year, without retreating. In that regard, I am a happy person. Also I think when I reached 35, I started doing this kind of showing off.
Q: After the army (me:He left the army in 2011-and guess who took his position? in the army-Lee Jun-gi), you've seemed doing more activities. Is there any other roles you want to challenge?
A: I think all actors have similar ideas, but I'd like to try wide range of roles. I think I can do villain characters well too. Thirty five years old was the turning point, I am able/willing to do an evil role who does the betrayal without hesitation.
Q: Tell me about your abs and beard which became hot issue on-line.
A: I can show my abs anytime, but I do not have chiseled abs like sculpture. You see, not every actor can have good body. I don't look bad with beard either. Unless I am working, I usually don't shave. Public seem to think that is very amusing, but it is not because I was grooming, but I was just not shaving. I think male who has beard would understand. That is just my daily look.
Q: Have you commented on on-line articles talking about you?
A: No. But I love reading comments. There are so many witty comments. I have seen complementing comments. On an article which wrote about me with the beard, there was a comment "If you are going to use your face like that, just give it to me." I felt really good because it was great compliment.
Q: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
A: I hope when actor 'Lee Jin-wook' is mentioned nothing comes to mind to people. Personally I am afraid to have certain image as an actor. I'd like to be an actor who can approach the public just through the projects (by the characters I play).

I also found some blog carrying his past interviews (continue in next comment)

More on Lee Jin-woo. This is from a blog containing some of his past interviews. [yurajun.tistory]
He quit college. "Since I was young, I enjoyed the time being alone and I didn't feel awkward being alone. I loved to read books and I was a child who was the friend with loneliness and solitude. I was very quiet when I was in school. So friends who knew me from old school days are amazed (about me being an actor).. When I was in first year in the college I quit school and traveled up to Seoul. Since I picked the school according to my grade not to what I wanted to study, I didn't want to continue... I just came to Seoul (without a plan) so I was anxious- If I should work in service area or learn how to operate the heavy machinery. I was confident that I could do well whatever I do that time.. My mother and father were dead against it, but I was firm and said 'I am leaving' and left to Seoul."
He had hard time in Seoul. "In Seoul I did manual labor, and did various part time jobs- in coffee shops, restaurants, soju bars etc. Having difficulty financially, I started to avoid meeting people. During 2002 World Cup, I was watching the game by myself. That was when I had the most difficult time. I couldn't go back home, and even if I go back there was no guarantee things would get better."

About the drama 'Nine' he got recognition, he said "If I have the magic incense sticks like that, the place I want to go back is where I had my first love. I insisted to my mother I wanted to marry my girlfriend when I was in the kindergarten and got scolded. So if I can get an incense stick I'd like to go back there. It is not like I want to change something or want to see that friend. I just want to see myself when I was having butterflies."
He doesn't cry over his failure. "Of course I want to fix my failure occurred in the past. But I think I am still in the center of that failure and I am winning. I think I am what I am now based on that failure."

"Recently I watched my first project. Strange thing is that the acting which was so weird and awkward that time does not look bad when I see it now. The acting I did to look cool and overacted looks old-fashioned when watched later, but limited range of expression of emotions and being played modest looked ok now. It is like you like your graduation picture you took ordinarily more than the one you took with being primed at your best."

His life style includes music and books. "The music I usually like is Pansori "SimchungGa' and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. I listen to any kind of music. Classical music and Korean traditional music both have charms. One time I learned Pansori because I thought it would be helpful for vocalization during acting, but I came to really like it later."
"The books I like is Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, Süskind's Das Parfum, and Auster's Moon Palace. Especially after I read 'Perfume', I wanted to play a serial murderer for sure."
He may have some influence from his mother. "Not long ago, my mother and I talked about life watching a drama together, and she said "There is nothing special about the life looking at the life I've lived so far. So just live happily every moment." During that conversation, I thought about fleeting nature of youth and being youthful."

He didn't intend to become an actor. "I didn't dream to become an actor. I just thought I'd do well if I do the acting, so I signed up at the acting school with the money I saved. I took my pictures for my profile myself and visited magazine publishers and agencies... I got rejected many times. I thought "Oh I don't have a face to become an actor.. but I could be a good actor because anyone can act if they work hard." Finally he debuted as Panasonic model in 2003, and he went to DahakRo (university streets where small playhouses are) and learned acting by playing on the stage. He said if he didn't become an actor, he might have continued to be a stage actor in DaehakRo. He debuted with the drama 'Bad girl' in 2004 and continued to do more projects, and got deserving recognition for 'Nine' in 2013.

About his ideal type, he said "I don't have any special ideal type. I just like a person I can communicate well and well balanced." As everyone remembers, he was famous as Choi Ji-woo's man one time. He met her while doing the drama 'Air city' in 2007. (made the news for noona romance him being 6 year younger). Around that time he said, "Love is the most important for me. In the past, love was just part of my life, but now it is the peak of my life. I enjoyed solitude in the past. I was negative about love and have never done real love, but that idea changed ever since I did the project 'Someday'. I feel like I am changing to be an extrovert." (Someday- 2006, Air city- 2007). Sadly they broke up after he went to do army duty. (official reason: Open date is uncomfortable). He became Gong Hyo-jin's man in 2014, but just a few months after, they broke up. It was said that it was due to persistent reporters - they could not date freely and felt burdened by date made public, so they became distant. (Isn't this sad)

Now you know all about Lee Jin-wook ;) lol.

Other news: There was Production press conference for 'Flower in Prison' (I am so excited for the show- never missed this PD's project). The only thing everyone? concerns is the lead Jin Se-yeon's acting. PD Lee Byung-hoon stated the reason for choosing her as the lead- 'Cheerfulness'. "I always choose the male and female leads with innocent impression. In that sense I think Go Soo and Jin Se-yeon has fitting image.. Especially JSY shouldn't be gloomy even though she was born in the prison. Many of her projects I have seen were dark. But when I actually met her, she was very cheerful unexpectantly." Also he said she was very aggressive arguing why can't she be Ok-nye, and he was persuaded completely. "I always wish male and female leads provide laughs in the filming set. When I asked Lee Young-ae(Daejanggeum), she did it 100%, and Han Hyo-jo (Dongyi) did it 100%. Go Soo and Jin Se-yeon did it too. So there was no reason not to choose them."
About the question how she will be different from Lee Young-ae and Han Hyo-ju, JSY said "I felt burdened, but I thought hard about how I can appeal with Ok-nye's unique charm." It is Action. "Ok-nye is good at action. She does martial arts well too. I thought I had to give cool image with action in earlier episodes."

now I am praying

Lee Young Ae gave a 110%. Dae Jang Geum brought me to dramaland in 2005.
I have fond memories of this show. My whole family were so into it and it's still my mom's favorite sageuk ever.

I've gotten pretty picky after watching Jung Ha-Yeon's sageuks. I didn't think sageuks could get any better. So deep into the history and culture of that time period.

I love the old ones from the late 1990s but sadly most of them have no Eng subs.

Sageuks will always be my favorite genre but I have a love hate relationship with the new crop of trendy sageuks lately.

Horse Doctor was a snore fest so I don't know about this one. The trailer looks gorgeous though so I'll check it out.

I watched Go Soo in The Royal Tailor and wasn't impressed. Jin Yi-Han would've charmed me into watching it till the end lol.

You are really serious sageuk fans, loving Jung Ha-Yeon’s sageuks. For me I like lighter somewhat fictional saeguk so Lee BH's projects are perfect for me. Yes, Horse Doctor was major disappointment. I hope this one is more like DaeJanggeum.

I need to lighten up a little because we are not going back to the golden era of sageuks.

Director Lee's sageuks appeals to everyone. Sangdo will always be my favorite.
I hope Flower will be a success if it's going to be his final project. He's got supporting actors in it that will make it memorable.

Aloha, Kiara!

Thanks for your pointer to Jung Ha-Yeon’s sageuks. I would actually like to see some that are historically accurate as well as boffo. (Hold the wire-fu and slo-mo swordfights, please.)

Thunderbolt extolled CONSPIRACY IN THE COURT and SHIN DON, thereby landing them on my To-Watch list. Here's the link:

http://www.dramabeans.com/2008/12/a-grump-reviews-2008/

I watched all 55 episodes of SONG OF THE PRINCE (2005) with Jo Hyun-Jae and Lee Bo-Young. Would have rewatched it, but the subtitles were not that great, and the resolution was low, if I recall correctly.

As for HORSE DOCTOR, it was one of the first I started watching, but after a couple of episodes, I quit. I've since learned that some sageuks start out slow, and that it might take a while before they get rolling. I'll give it another shot and compare it GU AM HEO JOON, which I liked a lot.

Thanks again, Pakalana

Aloha PakalanaPikake!

I feel very lucky that I started my sageuk obsession when there were amazing subbers around (WITH S2 especially with MrX - the history buff). I believe Thunderbolt was part of the team and JB before she started Dramabeans.

HeadsNo2 also did a review of Conspiracy in the Court.
http://www.dramabeans.com/?s=Conspiracy+in+the+court

and

thundie at her own site.

MisterX did a more detail review at Dramatic Eye under his top 500 dramas.

Although I prefer the old traditional sageuks I still enjoy sageuks even in it's new form.

Not one to always chime in on OTs....but...my $0.02...

Marriage Contract: Mature Ji Hoon (after reconciling with Hye soo) is THE PERFECT boyfriend/hubby. The support/rapport for his wife, the looks he gives her, the small things he does......just SIGHZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Neighbourhood Lawyer: NL looks interesting! The premise reminds me of the HKDrama Ghetto Justice, except the main guy in GJ wasn't a prosecutor, but a hot-shot up-and-coming lawyer who worked for rich dbags.

I KNOW RIGHT Neighbourhood Lawyer totally reminded me of Ghetto Justice, which I really really loved. TVB has been going downhill for many years, but Ghetto Justice was one of its last few good quality dramas... Sigh I miss the good old days of good quality HK dramas with strong plot and acting.

Is this the season for J dramas?

Love Song is SO awesome!!!
Juhan Shuttai is good too!
Ordinary Miracles: Have been seeing this drama mentioned a couple of times in OT. Started watching it last week. This has an Itsukoi vibe and I'm lovin' it.

Love Song is lovely.

Juhan Shuttai is pretty solid. Nothing particularly new and I'm not totally into the female lead but it's definitely an enjoyable watch so far.

Yay for Ordinary Miracles (I'm one of those that keep recommending it, shamelessly). It goes a bit darker than Itsukoi I'd say.

Crossing my fingers and toes for subs for Yutori Desu Ga Nani Ka...... watched the first episode unsubbed and it was already cracking me up big-time. Nice casting with Okada Masaki and Matsuzaka Tori as well Ando Sakura (not really familiar with Yagira Yuya yet, let's see what he brings to this dorama).

Sorry, I don't know!

Damn, just watched episode 2 and 3 of Love Song (I was behind, commenting just based on ep. 1) and have to say I'm totally in pieces every episode.

This is everything a music drama should be. Of course, it's not just a music drama, but so much more.

Yes, totally agree! It's such much lot more than just your average music drama ... at least so far that seems to be the case. It's is so pretty too! I really love how each episode opens with the cherry blossom petals + this instrumental that I'm desperately searching for + Sakura riding on her motorcycle. I don't necessarily want Sakura and Kohei to be in a romantic relationship - I don't think they are compatible esp. in terms of age. As of episode 3, I think she is just infatuated with Kohei. Gah, just watching her makes me feel like I'm infatuated with Kohei too ;P

0

@JJK

Sakura is totally crushing on Kohei, for good reason, he's treating her and her stuttering like no one else has before. It's not that he just accepts it (like her two friends do) but he also challenges her about it, to try new things, to inconvience other people if need be, to take those "seven second of courage" that can change her world.

I don't think we'll get a romantic relationship. I think they are father and daughter! I don't think they are dropping all those hints for nothing. To be honest, I'm not getting romantic vibes with them anyhow, Sakura is crushing on him but in a way you can admire an older person that you cherish a lot (and I'm already seeing their interactions in the father-daughter light, I confess). Kohei obviously has zero romantic interest in her, he's very clear on "I'm probably the same age as your parents" etc so I don't think it's even remotely entered his mind that someone like Sakura's age could girlfriend material. She's just "kid" to him.

Soraichi, meanwhile, is totally smitten by Sakura even if he would probably say to her face that he can't stand her...

I think the BGM will release after the drama ends, many Jdrama release the album consist of all the BGM they used while the song usually released by the artist/singer.

so it will be available later.

Thanks for the info! I can't wait for it! It's interesting that for kdramas there are usually people who are compiling BGM in each episode as the drama is airing but seems like that's not the case for jdrama?

0

@JJK I think Kdrama doesn't usually release BGM inst, they just release OST when it played on the drama, while J-Drama doesn't have lot of OST, usually just 2 for opening and ending while the have tons of BGM instrumental that will release after, I think that instrumental played on shop a lot as opposed to song,
I once really like 37,5 no namida inst in a loop for a week

hi there!

so have you heard that Jamie Oliver is in South Korea discovering the local delicacies, last seen on Jeju diving with the seashell-ajummas. He had dinner at some family shop served by a grandpa, with 22 side dishes, and ate ddeokbokki.

some folks have a weird grudge against the guy, but I think he is a great chap. the fight against sugar is very commendable. I dont think he´ll find a lot of that in korean kitchen.

I am back from Hungary, obviously, and it was SWELL. The last day I swam in lake Heviz - 39 m deep, 36 degrees warm. Then I come back to Tallinn... to snow and hale! WHAAAT???
Well ok... our weather is crazy, tuesday - ice rain and snow, yesterday was super warm, today it is raining all day
ah it would be too long to talk about all I saw in Budapest. Beautiful city, magnificent bridges, great music, although the wind was a tad strong and blew the bread away from my plate... the Museum of Applied Arts had amazing treasures, art nouveau, medieval laces and carpets from Morocco. Funny thing was there was a book in the museum shop, among all things hungarian, about the Estonian islands of Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Muhumaa. What the... Were they jealous that we have islands?

Also, in Heviz, there was this shy and timid korean girl who sat all alone in one of the less warm pools in the bathing house, cause she was afraid of the fat and vicious russian matrons in the warmest pool. I started talking to her and encouraged her to go and try out. But perhaps I was a little too talkative. she ran away.

I wouldnt mind Hungary winning Eurovision this year, I like Freddies voice and the country, even if the song is too rigid and rough for me. But Budapest would be a great place to hold the event.
talk about Eurovision, if it was a drama, which country would play what character? The grandpa, the family lawyer, the ambitious mom, the over-achiever daughter, the slacker son, the vain niece, the two-timing son-in-law, the driver of truck of death, the genius whatever etc?

to me Eurovision would be a school drama, where Estonia is the model student doing everything properly but always losing to the sassy popular kid. Finland would be the fat kid, who tries his damnedest, but can´t keep up. Hungary would be the one everyone goes crazy over on the school radio, but nobody recognizes in person. France is the son of the headmaster, who is not a bad kid, but everyone treats him mean. He´ll show them and get 1st place this year!
Russia is the daughter of a mafia boss, who doesn´t understand why everything isn´t handed to her on a plate without a question. Britain....oh, Britain! Publicly mocking the A-students, but secretly spending all night in the library copying their old text books. Sweden presents the same essay every year for the last 25 years and no one has noticed. San Marino: the embarrassing teacher trying to mingle with students, but his attempts make everyone cringe. Italy: a student who could easily get 1st, but would rather work less and keep a stable 3rd. Iceland: the strange and eccentric foreign exchange student, who is always talked about but no one is sure if she isa genius or a crazy person. Australia: not even a student at this school, but hangs around a lot. I am calling your headmaster, young man! Latvia: the nice kid, who treats everyone well, but the mafia girl scares him. Portugal: the unrecognized genius, who will get her spotlight after leaving school. Belgium: the potluck student, who flings it, sometimes hitting the mark, other times dead bottom.

Spain is the one that is mistaken to only care about partying and having it easy, but she just never reveals to anyone how hard she works to win. Instead, she pretends it comes effortlessly. Maybe she should just admit it...

as for Greece, he isn´t here to study (as proved by this years´song...) He is here because of the pheromones.

Ukraine is the storyteller that enchants everyone, but not everything about her stories is easy to understand. The intellectual femme fatale

Finally started Pied Piper this week and really enjoying it so far. Plagiarism allegations aside, it's an interesting set up with good acting and an intriguing, uneasy dynamic between the leads. Thematically, it's covering similar ground to the writer's earlier shows, playing around in the grey area between what's right and what's effective. I'm looking forward to where it goes from here.

I've been fighting the urge to marathon this...though, really, it's just self-torture at this point.

I do really think, though, that episode 9 was the creepiest episode ever.. I watched it last night on the floor in the dark, from this little dvd player, with my earphones on (so as not to wake my daughter, who sleeps in the same room), and though I knew I was being silly, I keep 'hearing things' and couldn't help looking over my shoulder. Utterly creeped out. So so good of you, Show.

Finally finished Signal after putting it on hold for awhile. I have to admit that I wasn't obsessed with it until episode 7. Definitely agree with everything that the writing, directing and acting is phenomenal but I guess when it was airing I wasn't in the right mood to watch it.

I also started Ms Temper and Nam Jung Ki. Still have loads to catch up on but I'm glad I started it after reading many positive reviews on here. Slice of life dramas are definitely my favorite.

Talking about slice f life I'm looking forward to the new tvN show on drinking. Not really a fan of drinking myself but I loved the Let's Eat franchise so I am curious what they'll going to bring to the table this time.

Anyone watched the latest episodes of Infinity Challenge? I only started to know about Sechskies in 2013 after watching a random episode of Happy Together with the 1st gen idols, but even I was over the moon when I found out the reunion was for real. I know I am gonna get lots of hate.

Marriage Contract - it was way too melodramatic for me. Yes, the chemistry was there but there was nothing new to storyline. Rich guy hates the poor girl and then falls in love with her while parents threaten the poor girl. For goodness sakes, if he had to borrow money from his friend, why She had had to be noble and return the money that she received from big bad daddy even if it meant her cancer treatment went wayside?

Watching Jackpot (JGS), The Entertainer(Ji Sung), Vampire Detective (Lee Joon) , and God of Noodles. 1N2D with new member Yoon Si Yoon this week !Also Ahn Jae Hyun joined A New Journey to the West 2, replacing Seung Gi who headed to the army. Apparently Seung Gi recommended Jae Hyun. Seems like an odd match, but we'll see. Maybe he's someone who really is funny but doesn't seem to be on first impression. Or not.

Only 6 or 8 eps, though. Not too memorable.

Howdy, Andrea!

Glad to meet a fellow Damn Yankee. Hatched in the Bay State, but grew up in Jersey, with a couple of years in Honolulu -- which in those days still had a New England feel in some neighborhoods courtesy of the Boston missionary influences. No triple-deckers, but some of the older single-family homes had that Boston-area look.

Er, I wouldn't say that I actually hate gats... Nor do I scrupulously avoid Joseon sageuks. Heck, most of them nowadays seem to be set in that era. There's a bunch of older ones set in Goguryeo that I haven't gotten to yet. Hehehe.

Ya, try this on for size. If you are of a certain age, you will remember the politically-incorrect former logo of the Massachusetts Turnpike. The other day I realized it looked like a gat. To wit:
http://www.universalhub.com/2010/when-turnpike-was-arrow-through-head

Hmmm. I may be more passive-aggressive about Confucian chapeaux than I realized. *facepalm*

While I was watching SU BAEK-HYANG, I really liked the commoner hanbok of that era. The mid-calf length tunics tied on one side and worn over pantaloons looked very comfy.

Now for some mood music!

Back on OT-444:

Hmmm… Just recalled that there is one scene in which Jin-Mu turns into a cad and a bounder and gets extremely fresh with Seol-Hee the usurper — in the ancestral shrine, no less — that you’ll want to skip...

Eureka!! YouTube is my friend!

Prince Jin-Mu behaving like a masher is in Ep. 70.

The Dance of Grace appears in episodes 39 and 44 (lessons and practice by both princesses); and in 106 (Seol-Nan in full regalia at court).

I found out that Seol-Nan's lovely Dance of the Drying Laundry at the palace in Gaya, and the wistful song that accompanies it, is in Ep. 83. Alas and alack, the clip on YouTube starts just after she finishes singing, so check the full episode. It's worth it. BTW: The king in purple is Soo Ni-Moon. I loved Kim Young-Jae's perfectly paranoid performance.

I usually catch the full episodes on HULU for the high resolution and MBC-supplied subtitles by D. Bannon.

Enjoy!

Hola Beanies! So happy the weekend is almost here. I’m slowly dipping my foot back into kdramaland again. I’ve watched a few dramas this year and I’ve enjoyed them for the most part.

Currently I’m checking out/looking forward to:

Oh My Ghostess- I am determined to finish this drama. I started it in January and I am still on episode 9. I like it, but the singular goal of the ghost trying to get laid grates on my nerves for some reason. Kim Seul-gi and Park Bo-young do a tremendous job, but I need her to have more depth.

One More Happy Ending- Started and finished last week. I liked it though it got a little angsty and slow towards the end. This is the 2nd drama of Jung Kyung-ho’s that I’ve watched (first was Falling for Innocence) and I really like him. Still need to watch Heartless City which has been on my watch list for years.

Fated to Love You (Korean version)- Just started this last night and I’m already on episode 5. I watched the original years ago and enjoyed it though the male lead was frustrating and sweet all at the same time. I remember screaming at my computer when he would do something stupid and then swooning when he did something sweet. I’m enjoying this version so far. Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara are so wonderful in this.

I’m super excited for Another Miss Oh to start next week. I’m always happy to see my man crush Eric Mun on my screen. :) I sort of want to check out Entertainer, but I have been hearing not so good things. I think I’ll finish Fated to Love You in a couple of days so I need to figure out what to watch after it. Decisions, decisions.

It's so strange. I do like Oh My Ghostess, but the constant throwing herself at Jo Jung-suk's character has just gotten old for me. His reactions are funny, the actresses are great, the show itself is well-done, but it just annoys me. I think I just need to watch one episode at a time instead of 2 or 3 in a row. I'm thinking small doses is the key. Goes against all my binge watching principles though :)

I'm thinking of watching it next actually. I remember when it aired and I think I skimmed a couple of recaps here and it sounded interesting, but I never got around to watching it. Strangely enough. I guess I just have to be in the right mood. I'll definitely mention it when I watch it :)

Aloha, SweetiePie54...

I watched FATED TO LOVE YOU for the first time in mid-March and marathoned it. The opening scene (filming the shampoo commercial) totally cracked me up. When I feel the need for a little lunacy, I rewatch it.

Considering that most productions I'd seen Jang Hyuk in up to that point were sageuk series (CHUNO, GREAT AMBITION, SHINE OR GO CRAZY) aside from one episode of BRIGHT GIRL'S SUCCESSl, which I intend to finish one of these days, it took me a while to get used to seeing him in modern duds. Without a sword.

At times I, too, was ready to scream when our hero did something obnoxious. But I could also understand how he got to be that way, what with his family of origin issues and all the conniving and plotting going on around him.

There were some truly sweet scenes. I loved his pet name for Mi-Young... Dalpengi. I enjoyed reading up on the folktale Mudsnail Bride.

Choi Dae-Chul as Director Tak just about broke my funny bone with his bromance with Lee Gun.

Ep. 13 has a lovely acoustic guitar version of "Edelweiss" (or "Eselweiss" to wiseasses with a warped sense of humor) from THE SOUND OF MUSIC. The soundtrack is terrific, with wonderful use of a wide range of background music, including an acoustic arrangement of "Let It Be" when evil stepmother schemes with the Lee Family bigwig about getting her son married off.

A comment in the Ep. 12 recap thread mentioned the JDorama HOURS OF MY LIFE, which prompted me to watch it. Very well done. Miura Haruma turned in a stunning performance.

Because it is a romantic comedy with more than a touch of medical and chaebol angst, FATED TO LOVE YOU has a very different vibe from THE HOURS OF MY LIFE. I deeply enjoyed them both, for different reasons. In comparison to the sprawling, multilevel plot and rollicking comedy laced with tragedy of FATED TO LOVE YOU, THE HOURS OF MY LIFE is a haiku on one young man's challenge to live and love to the fullest when faced with a terminal illness.

Just recalled that I decided to watch FTLY because of another 2Jangs collaboration, DRAMA FESTIVAL: OLD GOODBYE, which was quite touching and lowkey, with more than a hint of fate involved. Then DANCE OF THE DRAGON caught my eye: JH as a kid from the boondocks who dreams of becoming a ballroom dancer. Boy, was that fun to watch. Tango minus sword, with a dash of Shaolin forms. Reminiscent of BALLERINO, an uplifting 2-parter that I watched on Viki last fall or so. Excellent.

Cheers,
PakalanaPikake

I'm adding Hours of My Life, Ballerino and Dance of the Dragon to my ever growing watch list. I've never watched a JDorama, but I'm actually looking to expand my drama viewing.

I'm very familiar with Jang Hyuk, which is interesting since I don't think I've ever watched him in a drama. I've seen a couple episodes of Chuno, but I never sat down watched it. I'm still only a few episodes into FTLY, but I am really loving him in this. He's hitting all the beats exceptionally well and has the right balance of wacky and heartfelt/serious. I'm really loving Jang Nara as well. She plays this type of character really well, but her chemistry with Jang Hyuk really makes her pop. The more I think about it, the more I am looking forward to getting through the episodes. I know there is some heart-wrenching stuff coming up, but I am actually looking forward to it since both actors are capable of so much depth.

I'll definitely be listening to the music in this even more closely now. It's so easy for dramas to be overpowered by the background music (Man of the Equator springs to mind) that it is so nice when the music matches and, in some cases, elevates the scene.

Aloha, Sweetiepie54!

Glad you found a couple more items for your watch list. ;-)

In digging around on YouTube for the DANCE OF THE DRAGON OST, I came across a vintage clip of JH learning to tap dance. It was a behind-the-scenes look at preparations for a 1950s American-style dance number -- but it was not from GREASE as far as I could tell. It might have been for a variety show or something. I couldn't help but wonder if anyone showed him footage of Ann Miller or Arthur Duncan (of Lawrence Welk Show fame) routines from the '60s and 70s -- or NYC's own Rockettes!

PTME - Jang Hyuk's tap dance (2003)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvtxRRABVBc

As for BALLERINO, the master is a real-life ballet dancer. I'm not a ballet fan myself -- I'm just not a vulture for culture. But the story and characters have a lot of heart, and that's what got me.

I think the first drama I watched JH in was GREAT AMBITION / DAEMANG. I'd gone bonkers over Jo Hyun Jae's turn as Prince Myong Nong in SU BAEK-HYANG, and was researching his earlier work. An article posted on the SBH forum at Soompi mentioned that his first princely role was in GREAT AMBITION, which led to the title role in SEODONGYO / SONG OF THE PRINCE set in Baekche and Shilla. But I digress.

JH plays the lead in the Joseon-era tale of commerce, corruption, and revenge. After that, I watched CHUNO. Both shows had dandy supporting casts, including actors I'd seen and enjoyed in SBH and other sageuks. Gat Alert.

I loved the music in CHUNO. I don't like rap, but MC Sniper won me over with his lyrics. Not what I was expecting from a tale of slave hunters and political intrigue and upheaval. There was humor to lighten the dire social conditions, and plenty of swordfighting to keep me happy.

For the heck of it I watched VOLCANO HIGH about two months ago. DramaGalaxy.tv had the original Korean rock soundtrack instead of the US release with dubbed American rappers. It feels like a cross between the Ramones' "Rock 'n' Roll High School" and the Sharks vs. the Jets from WEST SIDE STORY. I suspect that the flying martial arts moves are spoofing The Matrix, which I've never seen. I didn't understand the ending, but suspect that there's some pseudo-Zen angle to it. Or perhaps the whole point was that Kyung-Soo finally learns to control the powers he acquired as a kid when he fell into a tank of (electric?) eels during a thunder and lightning storm.

A while ago, I watched Oh My Ghostess for a few episodes, but then got distracted by other, more exciting shows.
But I got back around to marathoning OMG for the last half and enjoyed it. Park Bo Young and Jo Jung Seok had such great chemistry. The mystery/intensity picked up too.

Ohmygoodness, you should watch Heartless City soon!!! I like Jung Kyung Ho a lot and have watched the newer dramas you mentioned, but I think his role in Heartless City was the best. HC was so intense and violent and outright scary at times.

I'm excited for Another Oh Hae Young too! Didn't realize it was next week. I'm not familiar with Eric, but the story seems funny.

I'm looking forward to the mystery coming into the forefront in OMG. Besides the chemistry between the two leads, I think the mystery is why I haven't dropped it completely. I know it's coming and my curiosity over what happened to Kim Seul-gi's character is overriding my desire to let this one go.

Ohhhhhh, Heartless City has moved to the top of the watchlist lol. :)

When Another Oh Hae Young was announced for May, I just thought how far away it was and now May is practically here. Time is just going by so quickly. I am slightly biased, but I really like Eric as an actor. He's great in Que Sera Sera, though that is not the easiest drama to watch. It's very good though. I liked Discovery of Romance as well. I am actually really curious about Seo Hyun Jin as I haven't watched anything she has been in, but she seems really funny.

Just finished watching CANTABILE TOMORROW. Having never read the manga or watched the Japanese productions, I ignored the brouhaha over the Korean take on the story and its characters and just enjoyed the ride and the music. I will admit that Nae-Il's quirks drove me bonkers at times, particularly when they reappeared towards the end.

For some reason, I thought the overseas segments were supposed to take place in Vienna, but that steep hill outside the city and the towers of the cathedral nagged at me. I also kept thinking to myself that the river is exactly the same memorable greenish shade as the River Inn at Innsbruck. Ah, the Salzach is a tributary of the Inn... I visited Salzburg for one day on a high school trip during Easter break – my first journey to the German-speaking world after studying the language for four years. It was mid-April, and it snowed on Easter Monday. Froze my butt off.

Near the cathedral I came across one of those tiny pocket burial grounds with blooming flowers and picturesque wrought-iron crucifixes in lieu of headstones. It was so peaceful I commented that it sure felt like a nice place to be planted – and got my 18-year-old chops busted for the rest of the trip. Even before watching Kdramas with themes of reincarnation, I wondered if it might just have been a final resting place from a past life. ;-)

Cultural note: The spherical chocolate that Nae-Il fed Yoo-Jin looks like a “Mozartkugel” – literally “Mozart ball.” For real. Made of marzipan and nougat enrobed in dark chocolate.

Back in Jeju, I was surprised to recognize the actress playing Nae-Il's mom by her voice alone – she sounded just like Chun-hyang's mom, Wol-Mae, in HYANG DAN. Gadzooks – it's her! Am I correct in suspecting that in both productions she is speaking in satoori? The idea of a gisaeng in Namwon sounding like she's from Jeju is a real knee-slapper, right?

Happy Friday to all hands,
PakalanaPikake

PS: I loved Shim Eun-Kyung's performance as Oh Doo-Ri in MISS GRANNY. Her singing and dancing was terrific! Hats off to Na Moon-Hee's performance as her take-no-prisoners elder self.

I'm currently enjoying the c-dramas more than the k-dramas at the moment.

K-Dramas

Ms. Temper: I'm really enjoying this drama and ODJ and WJ are so cute. I started watching last week and I'm waiting for more episodes so I can marathon. I'm loving ODJ's IDGA attitude. Currently watching: EP. 9/16

Mrs.Cop 2: Lost interest because of the female lead. I don't know if I'll finish watching it. Currently watching: EP.10/20

Entertainer: This week's episodes were better than last week and the ratings are increasing. Surprisingly.

C-Dramas

15 Years of Waiting for Migratory Birds: I'm really liking this. I like Li Li and her best friend but I don't like the cousin. Currently watching: EP. 21/24

My Amazing Boyfriend: I'm really liking this so far. The female lead is too funny. I loved it when he was telling his story and she fell asleep. Currently watching: EP. 4/28

Ode to Joy: LOVE❤ LOVE❤ LOVE❤ this show!! I'm loving the female bond. An Di is my favorite and I hope she ends up with her boss. Ying Ying is my least favorite and she needs to grow up and start listening to others. Plus she cries TOO much. (BONUS: Some of the actors and director are from Nirvana is Fire) Currently watching: EP.11/46

Lots of talks here on signal. For some reason I still have not watched last four episodes.I love this show, but maybe lost the momentum, while I absolutely am addicted to all the characters,I'm not sure if I can bear lee jae han's questionable ending.
Anyway still upset that marriage contract did not end in a good note. While the story was mostly commonplace, uee made it work for real. She brought her character alive, her pain was realistic, her hardship more painful than her non existent unsuccessful love life.LSJ's character was a spoiled brat who got to have a life lesson 101 thanks to a 'struggling with life' and bitter ahjumma.I started watching this show because of 'lack of any 'common kdrama; with typical tropes, but this drama made me watch out for it.Like signal have not watched the last two episodes yet lol,but the drama has been good, and I'll miss the trio. What was name of that restaurant again?
Also 'Goodbye mr.black'.I also can't see black and swan together, though loved their time together in the deserted island, the chicken and all,but donno, maybe the drama took a wrong track afterwards? Maybe it's just too many things a time, trying to be an action/romance/comedy,basically everything. Also,in the original drama,CMIIW,did not hero come back to the original lover? So in that sense, there was no question of this love triangle right..I have read 'count of monte christo',I'm just not sure if the drama is following the orignal.

Hi, Kaylie...

I haven't watched SIGNAL yet, but now it's definitely on my list. I haven't really been looking for a cop show, but as an ex-disc jockey, the metaphysical angle (where does the go after it leaves the transmitter, and for how long?) gets my attention.

Thanks for that link. Earworm Alert!

I'm going bonkers listening to this track. The guitar reminds me at times of a laid-back "Down to the Water Line" by Dire Straits, or something from Al Stewart's Year of the Cat LP. It has a late 70s rock ballad feel.

Anyway, Road/Path really grabbed me musically. Then I tracked down the lyrics, which perfectly fit the mood. The feelings come through without the words. Emotion as universal language.

That's one of the big reasons I've gotten addicted to Kdramas. In so many cases, the music is evocative in a way that went missing from American TV long ago (around the advent of "reality" shows, and I haven't bothered to look for it. Now I know where to find it -- in Kdramaland.

I listened to a couple more tracks and found more lyrics. Really good. Thanks again!

PS -- By any chance, are you a FIREFLY fan?

Glad that you like Road! Actually all of Signal's soundtracks are wonderful. You're so right about emotion being the universal language. The soundtracks evoke a lot of emotions in me and I feel that it's the music that makes the experience of watching Signal so enjoyable. The show itself is already a 90, with the music it's 100.

----

Me too. Sometimes I cannot even identify how I'm feeling, so much is swirling around inside.

The OST and background music in COFFEE PRINCE turned me into a basket case in late February. It came as a great antidote to the wet blanket of winter darkness that was sitting like a rock on my heart...

The biggest challenge for me is keeping up with the subtitles so I can understand the additional layer(s) of meaning provided by the lyrics. Alas, I don't have enough RAM to remember dialogue and lyrics (and plot!) simultaneously. So I guess I'll just have to focus on the dialogue, and hope to sneak a peek at the actor's expressions while listening to their voices and catching a glimpse of body language... and catching a ride on the music.

Maybe I just have to relax and let it be... As my late grandmother used to say, “This is supposed to be a treat, not a treatment.” ;-)

Aloha,

I watched Signal pretty regularly while it was airing but took a two week break before watching the last four episodes in one chunk. Not because I got bored with it, but because I was so emotionally invested in the characters, I needed some time to recover and prepare myself for ending, lol.

I thought that the penultimate episodes were a bit stronger than the actual finale, but found the overall ending very satisfying.

Hi, Peach...

I hear you! There are a couple of items on my list that I will have to be in a good space before I sit down to watch, 71 INTO THE FIRE, TAEGUKGI, THE LONG WAY HOME, and THE SILENCED being some of them.

And then there's the need to say farewell to characters I've grown to know and love. It happens to me with books, too. Parting is such sweet sorrow...

I'm not sure that I'll ever be able to live watch and blog a series again after going through the Sochi Olympics wringer with THE KING'S DAUGHTER SU BAEK-HYANG. If I were able to understand Korean and didn't need subtitles, it might have been a tad less stressful. As it was, the looming finale and cut episodes became too much for my poor heart (and bod) to bear. I miss that kind of intense camaraderie, but don't want to physically wipe myself out again. (Old dog, meet new trick.)

Thanks for your comments on SIGNAL, which makes it even more appealing to me.

I've been trying to find the film (not the TV series) TIME BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF accessible online in the US. It stars Ahn Kil-Kang, one of my favorite character actors. I've poked around in all the usual places I know. Has anyone viewed it lately?

Bonus Question: Why the heck is the exact same English title used for two different productions when the plots are so different?

I'm also looking at you, LUCID DREAM on NetFlix. Grrr. It is not a tale of kidnapping, but the name of a computer gaming company started by a guy haunted by Joseon-era dreams. I found it listed on IMDB as SNOW LOTUS, a 2-part drama special. The music is gorgeous. Despite the gats, there's an interlude of sparring between two sword fighters – and one Mane Of Glory sighting. I enjoyed watching it two months ago. A few days ago, I watched BUNGEE JUMPING OF THEIR OWN, which resonates thematically with SNOW LOTUS/LUCID DREAM.

While I was on that metaphysical roll back in late February, I also tracked down the 2010 film TRY TO REMEMBER aka HAVE WE ME? Thanks, JavaBeans, for your preview! I'd read that a movie had been made when I happened across a video news item on the Letter to Won's Father over at Daily Motion. It had me crying like a baby, and reminded me of sageuk dialogue. It sounded positively Shakespearean – but was put to paper 30 years before the Bard incarnated in England. Like BUNGEE JUMPING and SNOW LOTUS, it has some twists of its own. The true story of the archeological discovery of Eung Tae's mummy is so doggone touching.

Recycled Titles, Part 2

The first time I ran into the recycling of titles was with the JDorama and film THE ETERNAL ZERO / EIEN NO ZERO. Both are based on the same novel, so it makes sense.

Appreciative Aside to Beanies alua and MostlyAmused for their comments on the ep. 12 recap of FATED TO LOVE YOU that pointed me to my first JDorama, THE HOURS OF MY LIFE. Vielen Dank!

Miura Haruma's performance in that production was wonderfully deft and nuanced, which led me to ETERNAL ZERO. Except that I ended up watching the TV version and wondering where Miura-san was. Kiritani Kenta played the pilot's grandson, Saeki Kentaro. I definitely appreciated the additional back story and character development afforded by the dorama's longer running time.

When I noticed there was a movie version, I watched that, too. The CGI aerial footage was terrific, and made me want to rewatch TORA, TORA, TORA (1970) and THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN (1969). And THE BLUE MAX (1966) with George Peppard as a non-yangban WWI German air ace.

Alas, Miura-san's performance in the film was a letdown. Maybe he set the bar so high in THE HOURS OF MY LIFE that the only way left was down. :-( Alternatively, I could try to chalk it up to the character's extreme embarrassment when he found out that grandpa's fellow pilots considered him the biggest coward in the Imperial Japanese Navy's Air Service. I'd have that deer-in-the-headlights expression, too... Or was it a problem with the script or the directing? Hmmm.

Historical Note: A couple of years ago I got to see (and hear) the Collings Foundation's B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, and P-51 Mustang on the Wings of Freedom Tour. I was amazed at how small they seemed in comparison to a 747. Got to crawl through the bombers as well. Americans had to have been a lot smaller back in those days to get around in the confined spaces in the bomb bays and turrets.

Now that warmer weather is on the way, if you are a vintage airplane nut, be sure to catch them if they fly into your neck of the woods.

However, NIRVANA IN FIRE is on my list. I've noted the raves here on DB.

Back in February, I was totally surprised to get instantly drawn into all 14 episodes of the Korean version of BICHEONMOO, and am now on the lookout for the complete 33-episode Chinese-dubbed version. The music is beautiful.

I was wondering if anyone knows someone who stopped watching kdramas because she fears that the male leads' characters can warp her sense of reality? Do dramas give you a superficial expectation of men/partners? Has a kdrama character ruin someone's love life before? Do you believe that men in kdramas exist? Do we want a Jane Austen hero that can never exist? Did someone find a Mr Darcy?

It's easy.
Steps to manufacture a kdrama relationship
Step 1: woo a gorgeous man (preferably a little on the arrogant side )
Step 2: continue to have to misunderstanding and neglect to have real conversations that would clear everything up
Step 3: abstain from non-accidental bodily contact (manakin style surprise kisses are sometimes acceptable) for at least 5 months
There you have it!

I was just re-reading your Top 10 list and it occurred to me that we haven't gotten any this year and I miss the lists so much. Any chance DB for more top 10's? Maybe a top 10 saguek or a top 10 geeeeeeenius character. *claspshandstobeg*. Any list is fine, please please just give us a list.
